Streaming Income Data Viz Lab

How much does a recording artist actually earn from streaming — and which platforms are worth their time? This lab maps the economics of digital music distribution across Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, broken down by artist tier from Nano to Macro.

Data sourced from the streaming_revenue_benchmarks table in the mdelamaz_streaming_income database.

4 Platforms

Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok — each with distinct CPM structures, audience dynamics, and revenue scalability.

4 Artist Tiers

Nano → Micro → Mid-Tier → Macro. The jump from Micro to Mid-Tier is where platform choice starts to dramatically change outcomes.

Instagram Dominates

At Macro tier, Instagram generates over $1.8M annually vs. Spotify's $15K — a 120× difference driven entirely by CPM model divergence.

The table below shows raw data from streaming_revenue_benchmarks. Est. annual revenue = (mid-point views ÷ 1,000) × avg CPM. Mid-point views: Nano = 12,500 · Micro = 110,000 · Mid-Tier = 600,000 · Macro = 3,000,000. Click any row for derived stats.

Platform DNA — CPM, Scalability & Reach by Tier

Each platform scored across three dimensions: average CPM, revenue scalability (growth from Nano to Macro), and audience reach potential. Select a tier to see how the platform landscape shifts as an artist grows. A larger area = stronger overall earning profile at that tier.

Fig 1. Radar axes: Avg CPM (normalized), Revenue Scalability, Audience Reach, Earning Ceiling, Platform Stability. Data: streaming_revenue_benchmarks table.

Visualization 2 — Bubble Chart

Earning Potential — Tier × Platform × Revenue

Each bubble represents one platform–tier combination. The X axis shows artist tier progression, the Y axis shows estimated annual revenue, and the bubble size encodes earning potential relative to all combinations. Hover any bubble for full details.

Fig 2. Bubble size = proportional earning potential. Revenue = (mid views ÷ 1,000) × avg CPM. Data: streaming_revenue_benchmarks table.

Glossary of Key Terms

Platform
The streaming or social media service distributing the artist's content: Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok.
Tier
Audience-size classification: Nano (5K–20K), Micro (20K–200K), Mid-Tier (200K–1M), Macro (1M+).
CPM
Cost Per Mille — revenue earned per 1,000 streams or views. The primary unit of platform monetization.
Avg CPM
Midpoint of CPM Low and CPM High: (cpm_low + cpm_high) ÷ 2. Used as the basis for all revenue estimates.
Scalability
How much an artist's revenue grows as they move up tiers. Instagram has the highest scalability; Spotify the lowest.
Est. Annual Revenue
Calculated as (mid_views ÷ 1,000) × avg_cpm. A baseline annual income estimate per platform per tier.
Earning Ceiling
The maximum estimated annual revenue achievable on a platform at Macro tier — used as a normalized radar axis.
